Description
The village of Manastir stands 1650 meters above sea level and is situated at the foot of Prespa peak in the heart of the Rhodope. It is the highest elevated settlement in the whole Balkan Peninsula and is located 67 km away from Plovdiv and 19 km from the town of Laki.
Manastir is probably founded by immigrants, coming from Perushtitsa who settled near to a destroyed monastery which gave the name to the village (Manastir means Monastery).
Winter is snowy and long - lasting and summer is cool and pleasant.
The village is a part of the territory of a nature reserve that forests are full of wild animals and protected plants. It is a starting point for many itineraries in the Rhodope Mountain- to the chalets Svoboda (Liberty) and Prespa (Snow- drift)- distant in 2 and a half hours, to "Momchil Junak" chalet (3 hours), etc.
The village is located 6km away from a historical place called "Haiduk’s meadows" and in its surroundings there are scores of springs and fountains with running crystal water.
On the way to the village can be visited other places of interest like the Monastery of Bachkovo, the Cross forest, the Asen’s fortress and so on. In the village there is a dormitory and some private holiday houses.
